A severe geomagnetic storm is underway, potentially making the aurora borealis - commonly known as the Northern Lights – visible across a wider swath of the United States than usual on the night of January 19, 2026. This rare event is due to a powerful coronal mass ejection (CME) from the sun impacting Earth’s magnetic field.
What is a geomagnetic Storm?
A geomagnetic storm is a temporary disturbance of Earth’s magnetosphere caused by a solar wind shock and/or a coronal mass ejection (CME) from the Sun. These storms can disrupt radio communications, GPS systems, and power grids, though the current event is not expected to cause widespread infrastructure damage. The strength of geomagnetic storms is categorized on a scale from G1 (Minor) to G5 (Extreme). Currently, a G4 (Severe) geomagnetic storm watch is in effect.
