Regional and Demographic Differences in Parkinson’s Disease in the Netherlands
Researchers from Utrecht University and Radboudumc have collaborated to study the distribution of Parkinson’s disease across the Netherlands. Analyzing data from 2017 to 2022,they created a map illustrating the areas with the highest prevalence of the condition.
the research indicates a higher incidence of Parkinson’s in Friesland and Groningen compared to Zeeland. The reasons for this disparity remain unclear.
Men More Affected Than Women
The study confirms that men are diagnosed with parkinson’s more frequently than women. Potential explanations include greater occupational exposure to harmful substances for men and the protective effects of female hormones on the brain.
Individuals with a higher socioeconomic status also exhibit a greater risk of developing Parkinson’s. Researchers suggest lifestyle factors, such as smoking habits, may contribute to this trend, as non-smokers have a higher risk of Parkinson’s disease.
Environmental Factors and Further Research
The researchers found ‘no clear concentration of Parkinson’s in specific areas that would align with, such as, intensive agriculture or poor air quality’. Though, they emphasize that the environment may still play a role.
Further inquiry is needed, as the risk of Parkinson’s develops over decades. Previous research has established links between air pollution and pesticides and an increased risk of the disease. “Thes effects are not always visible on a map, as exposure can vary substantially within a region.”
