Democrats Diverge on Homeland Security Funding Bill, Supporting ICE Amidst Internal Debate
A recent House vote revealed a meaningful divide within the Democratic party, as seven representatives joined Republicans to pass a funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), including considerable allocations for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Representative Henry Cuellar of Texas and Don Davis of North Carolina were also among the seven Democrats who crossed party lines. Cuellar has previously voiced concerns regarding ICE tactics and the case of Renee Nicole Good,acknowledging that such actions “complicated” efforts to address concerns about ICE targeting legal workers in Texas. He emphasized the importance of focusing on criminal activity, stating, “If they want to get rid of criminals, that’s one thing, but when they start going after the work side, that has an impact on our economy.”
Notably, the bill garnered support from across the political spectrum, though not without dissent. Representative Thomas Massie, a Republican from Kentucky known for his critical stance towards the Trump management, was the sole Republican to vote against the funding bill.
