Illinois Expands Real ID Access with Weekend Hours to Avoid Federal Penalties
Illinois residents are facing a looming deadline to obtain a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or risk being unable to board domestic flights or access federal buildings. To address the anticipated surge in demand and help residents avoid a $45 penalty beginning February 1st, state officials have announced expanded access to Real ID services, including special weekend hours at select locations.
What is a Real ID?
The Real ID is a federal security standard established after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. It requires states to meet certain security requirements for driver’s licenses and identification cards.Starting may 7, 2025, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will require individuals to have a Real ID-compliant driver’s license, state-issued ID, or another acceptable form of identification (like a U.S. passport) to board domestic flights and enter certain federal facilities.
