Suriname Launches Grofvuil Removal Campaign to Combat⁤ Chikungunya

Suriname is actively addressing the spread of chikungunya through a nationwide grofvuil (bulky waste) removal campaign. ⁢The initiative, led by the Directorate of Public Green Spaces adn ‍Waste Management (OGA), aims⁣ to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds by removing discarded items where mosquitoes can proliferate. The campaign is particularly focused on areas with high rates of chikungunya infection, including Marowijne and Blauwgrond.

Grofvuil Removal efforts

The OGA, under the Ministry of Public⁢ Works and Spatial Planning (OWRO), initiated the grofvuil collection on Friday, targeting locations identified by the Ministry⁣ of Health, Welfare and Labor (VGA) as hotspots for⁢ chikungunya transmission. According to Anwar moenne,⁣ the acting director of OGA, the response from residents in Marowijne and Blauwgrond has been significant, indicating a substantial amount of accumulated bulky waste. The ⁤operation ⁤involves collaboration between OWRO, VGA, district commissioners, and the National Coordination Center for disaster Management⁣ (NCCR). The ‍NCCR ‍has provided two vehicles to support the removal efforts.‍ Contracted workers and inmates are participating in the physical removal of the waste.A post-project evaluation will be conducted to assess the campaign’s effectiveness.
