Ethan Hawke Found Filming ‘The Weight‘ Physically Demanding
ethan Hawke described filming his new movie, the Weight, as “one of the hardest summers of my life,” due to the physically challenging nature of the production. The film, a character-driven action movie set during the Great Depression, required extensive outdoor shooting and presented unique difficulties for the 55-year-old actor.
The Physical challenges of filming
Hawke explained to Entertainment Weekly that the demanding conditions stemmed from the film’s location work. “Being in the water, being in the woods…it was exhausting. Just worrying about the ticks alone,” he said. The production took place over six weeks in the Bavarian forests in Germany in 2025, bringing back memories of his experience filming White Fang in Alaska for six months.
A Return to Character-Driven Action
The inspiration for The Weight came from hawke’s reflections on classic cinema while working on the 2022 documentary series, The Last Movie Stars,about Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. he noticed a decline in action films that prioritized character progress alongside action sequences.
“I was watching all these older movies, and I got thinking about why there was a genre of action movie that was around in the ’60s and ’70s that were character-driven action movies,” Hawke stated. “There were action movies where not a lot of s*** blows up. They’re about people, but they’re high stakes.”
Hawke collaborated with director Padraic McKinley to create a film that would pay homage to the style of actors like Paul Newman and steve McQueen. He felt a sense of urgency to make this type of film before aging limited his ability to take on such roles.
Exploring Masculinity and Integrity
Hawke’s character, Samuel Murphy, a down-on-his-luck widower, embodies “an old-fashioned idea of the principled man.” The actor expressed his interest in portraying “positive manifestations of masculinity,” focusing on themes of dignity,empowerment,fatherhood,and service. He aimed to explore these principles within the context of an action genre, testing the character’s integrity.
“I’m really interested in trying to put forth a story right now about positive manifestations of masculinity,and like,what is dignity,empowering others,taking care of others,fatherhood,serving. Those kinds of old-fashioned principles, and then set them in an action genre, and have a person’s integrity tested,” Hawke explained.
A long-Sought Role
Hawke described the role as one he had been seeking throughout his career.He has consistently searched for characters that challenge him and allow him to explore new facets of his acting abilities.
