Seif al-Islam Gaddafi Buried in Libya Amidst Loyalists’ Support
Thousands of supporters gathered on Friday for the burial of Seif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, in the town of Bani Walid. The burial took place nearly 15 years after the 2011 uprising that led to the overthrow and death of his father. Seif al-Islam was killed in Zintan on tuesday, according to reports.
Background and Political Context
Seif al-Islam Gaddafi was once considered a potential successor to his father, and even cultivated an image of a reformer. However, his reputation was severely damaged when he threatened “rivers of blood” in response to the 2011 uprising. He was subject to an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged crimes against humanity, and sentenced to death by a Tripoli court, though later granted amnesty. In 2021, he announced his intention to run for president, but the elections were indefinitely postponed.
Libya remains politically fractured, divided between the UN-backed government of Prime Minister abdelhamid Dbeibah based in Tripoli and an eastern governance supported by General Khalifa Haftar
