Choosing the Healthiest Peanut Butter: What to Look For, According to Consumer Reports
Many consumers assume that commercially available peanut butter consists of a simple blend of ground peanuts, but recent investigations reveal a more complex picture. According to a report by 60 Millions de Consommateurs (a French consumer magazine published by the National Institute of consumption), not all peanut butters are created equal.
The ideal peanut butter, the report finds, shoudl adhere to the original recipe: roasted peanuts ground into a puree, relying on the natural oils within the peanuts to achieve a smooth, buttery consistency. However, some manufacturers add unnecessary and possibly unhealthy ingredients.
“There is no need for preservatives or texture agents (such as emulsifiers); the peanut is sufficient unto itself,” states 60 Millions de Consommateurs. The magazine highlights that some brands include added vegetable oils (such as rapeseed/canola, sunflower, cotton seed, or palm oil), and also salt and sugar – ingredients the publication advises consumers to avoid.
What to Look For in a Healthy Peanut Butter:
* 100% Peanuts: Prioritize peanut butters listing only peanuts as the ingredient.
* No Added Sugar or Salt: Opt for varieties without added sweeteners or sodium.
* No Preservatives or Emulsifiers: These are unnecessary, as peanuts naturally maintain quality.
* oil-Free: Avoid products with added vegetable oils.
Storage and Shelf Life:
A jar of natural peanut butter can be stored for up to six months after opening in a cool, dry place. Refrigeration isn’t necessary and can actually make the peanut butter harder to spread.
Cost Considerations:
According to 60 Millions de Consommateurs, peanut butters without additives typically range in price from €10 to €14 per kilogram, depending on jar size.
