Globally, approximately 6 in every 100 people who contract COVID-19 are estimated to develop long COVID. Importantly, healthcare providers are also recognizing the potential role of psychological factors in the persistence of symptoms. While this approach has been met with some criticism, many clinicians believe that addressing mental health concerns can complement traditional medical interventions and improve overall outcomes. The CDC emphasizes that validating patient symptoms and identifying additional care and support services are key components of effective long COVID management.
Prevention remains the most effective strategy against long COVID. Promoting COVID-19 vaccination is paramount, as studies suggest that vaccination reduces the risk of developing long COVID following infection. Continued public health measures, such as mask-wearing and social distancing, can also help to reduce transmission and minimize the number of new cases, thereby lowering the overall burden of long COVID.
