Sanjay Dutt Announces Khalnayak Returns & Confirms Work on Vaastav 2, Calls on Raju Hirani to Bring Back Munna Bhai at Mumbai Event

Bollywood veteran Sanjay Dutt confirmed during a recent event in Mumbai that work has begun on a sequel to his iconic 1999 film Vaastav, while as well making a heartfelt appeal to filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani to revive the beloved Munna Bhai franchise. The announcement came as part of the launch event for Khalnayak Returns, the long-awaited sequel to the 1993 blockbuster Khalnayak, where Dutt reunited with director Subhash Ghai and producers from Jio Studios and Aspect Entertainment.

Speaking to journalists at the event, Dutt revealed that his production banner, Three Dimension Motion Pictures, is actively developing Vaastav 2, a follow-up to the critically acclaimed crime drama that originally starred him as Raghu, a Mumbai-based gangster grappling with guilt, and redemption. When questioned about the possibility of a third installment in the Munna Bhai series—where he portrayed the lovable goon Murli Prasad Sharma—Dutt deferred to Hirani, saying, “You’ll have to ask Raju Hirani. Raju, please make Munna Bhai again!” The comment drew laughter and applause from the audience, underscoring the enduring affection fans hold for the duo’s cinematic collaborations.

The event, which also featured reflections from Subhash Ghai on his early collaborations with Dutt, highlighted the actor’s enduring legacy in Indian cinema. Ghai recalled first working with Dutt on the 1982 film Vidhaata, where the young actor played the grandson of Dilip Kumar’s character. He shared anecdotes about Dutt’s initial reluctance to pursue acting, quoting him as saying, “Main kyun actor banu? Mujhe motorcycle chalani hai!” (“Why should I become an actor? I want to ride a motorcycle!”), before describing how Dutt gradually evolved into a serious performer through films like Sadak (1991) and Saajan (1993). Ghai noted that during the making of Khalnayak, he had already envisioned Dutt in the titular role of Ballu, the volatile anti-hero, despite interest from other major stars.

Dutt, in turn, playfully corrected Ghai’s recollection, stating that the director had not narrated the full script but simply told him, “Yeh film tujhe karni hai!” (“You have to do this film!”)—a moment that drew laughter and illustrated the long-standing, trusting rapport between the two filmmakers. The exchange served as a nostalgic highlight of the event, reinforcing the deep personal and professional bonds that have shaped decades of Hindi cinema.

The launch of Khalnayak Returns has generated significant buzz, particularly after the release of its teaser, which showcased Dutt reprising his intense and gritty portrayal of Ballu. Industry observers noted the strong audience response to the preview, signaling renewed interest in one of the most memorable villain roles in 1990s Bollywood. With Dutt now confirming active development on Vaastav 2 and openly advocating for Munna Bhai 3, the event has sparked widespread speculation about a potential renaissance of some of his most iconic characters.

As of now, no official release dates or casting details have been announced for either Vaastav 2 or Khalnayak Returns. Similarly, Rajkumar Hirani has not publicly responded to Dutt’s appeal for Munna Bhai 3, though the filmmaker has previously expressed openness to revisiting the franchise if the right story emerges. Fans and industry watchers alike are awaiting further updates from the respective production houses regarding next steps.
