Rhode Island Fugitive Dr. Ronald Fischer Captured Off NY/NJ Coast After 20 Years on the Run

U.S. Marshals have apprehended Ronald Fischer, a fugitive who evaded law enforcement for two decades after fleeing Rhode Island during his 2005 sexual assault trial.

Fischer was discovered aboard a 56-foot sailboat named The Silver Lining, which investigators determined was registered under the alias “Richard Graydon.” The arrest followed a coordinated two-day intelligence operation involving the U.S. Marshals Service, the FBI, and Rhode Island law enforcement agencies, according to official statements from the U.S. Marshals Service for the District of Rhode Island.

A Two-Decade Manhunt

The charges against Fischer stem from a 2003 incident involving an alleged sexual assault that occurred aboard his boat, then named the Lion King. Following his indictment, Fischer stood trial in Rhode Island in 2005; however, he fled the jurisdiction before the proceedings concluded. He was subsequently convicted in absentia of first-degree sexual assault.

For the next 20 years, Fischer remained at large, accruing additional federal charges for failing to appear in court and fleeing to avoid prosecution. The investigation into his whereabouts remained active, with federal and state authorities eventually developing new leads earlier this week that pointed to his presence in the waters near New York.

Apprehension at Sea

The U.S. Coast Guard assisted the Marshals in intercepting the vessel approximately one hour off the New York/New Jersey coastline. Upon his capture, Fischer was transferred to federal custody and transported to Manhattan, where he is currently being held.

Officials are evaluating whether Fischer will appear in federal court to address charges related to his flight from prosecution, or if he will be processed through the New York state court system to facilitate his extradition back to Rhode Island.

The fugitive’s return to Rhode Island will trigger the next phase of the judicial process, where he will face the consequences of his 2005 conviction.
