Controversy Over “Victory Party” Optics

The visuals, which show CJP leaders including spokespersons Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das dancing to Bollywood tracks in a banquet hall, surfaced shortly after the CJP called off a 37-day sit-in protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. The agitation, which began as a satirical social media page two months prior, centered on the NEET paper leak and broader examination irregularities. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned on July 25, stating he did not want the situation exploited by anti-national forces.

Allegations of Abandoning Protesters

The backlash has extended to founding members of the online platform. Commentator and YouTuber Meghnad launched a scathing attack on CJP leaders, claiming that while they were partying, more than 70 protesters and students were left homeless and starving on the streets. Meghnad stated in an Instagram post that he and others spent two days using their own money to send abandoned volunteers home after seeing the party video at 4 a.m.

Additional criticism has focused on the status of rank-and-file members. Supporters expressed feelings of betrayal, noting that many protesters continue to face arrests and harassment by authorities in states including Assam, West Bengal, and Bihar while the leadership celebrated. One widely shared post on X claimed that “thugs” were enjoying lavish parties while hundreds of students remained in jails.

CJP Defense and “Gen Z” Activism

CJP spokesperson Saurav Das defended the videos, asserting they reflect the spirit of a younger generation that is confident, creative, resilient, and IMPOSSIBLE to stereotype. Das wrote on X that the uncles and aunties can keep complaining, and argued that the government and certain television anchors do not understand the language of Gen Z, stating, We can protest while dancing. We can organise while sipping cold coffee.

Regarding the venue, Das rejected claims of extravagance, stating the gathering was not at a five-star hotel, but rather a two-star or maybe three max establishment. He explained that the event took place in a basement hall to honor 150 to 200 volunteers—over half of whom had traveled from other states—and involved heart-to-heart interactions where leaders sat on the floor to speak with them individually.

Context of the Protest Conclusion

The CJP announced the withdrawal of its agitation on July 26 following a meeting with Union Ministers Jitendra Singh and JP Nadda. The party stated that several key demands were accepted, including:

• The resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan.
• Compensation for families of students who died by suicide during the exam-related turmoil.
• The withdrawal of FIRs against protesters in Delhi and BJP-ruled states.

Activist Sonam Wangchuk, who served as the figurehead of the protest and ended a 26-day hunger strike on July 23, reacted to the controversy by stating, Victory must be accompanied by humility. Wangchuk called for supporters to celebrate with dignity, restraint, and responsibility, adding that maintaining respect is as important as achieving success.

In a separate statement, Das expressed concern over reports of protesters being targeted in Assam, West Bengal, and Bihar. He assured that the CJP legal team is coordinating with lawyers to secure releases and reminded the government of its commitment to provide a written guarantee regarding these matters by Tuesday, July 28, 2026.
