The Kenya Wildlife Service is investigating the deaths of 15 elephants in Amboseli National Park, Kimana Sanctuary, and the Kuku Ranch area. Between June 24 and July 24, 2026, the animals died under unexplained circumstances, with preliminary tests from the University of Nairobi detecting a potential toxic substance
in several carcasses.
The sudden loss of 15 elephants within a single month has triggered an official probe in southern Kenya, a region where wildlife tourism is an economic pillar. Most of the deceased animals were female elephants and their calves; only one adult male was among the dead.
Clinical Signs and Carcass Recovery
Authorities have divided the fatalities into two distinct groups based on the condition of the remains. Ten of the elephants exhibited specific, similar clinical signs before death, which included partial paralysis that left them unable to stand. These animals typically died within one to two days of the onset of symptoms.
The remaining five elephants were found in a state that precluded a definitive cause of death. According to the Kenya Wildlife Service, these carcasses were either too decomposed or had been partially consumed by scavengers to allow for accurate clinical assessment.
University of Nairobi and Government Chemist Findings
Laboratory results currently provide conflicting data regarding the cause of death. Preliminary tests conducted by a laboratory at the University of Nairobi detected a potential toxic substance
in the samples. However, separate analyses performed by the Government Chemist returned negative results for the toxins tested.
Because of these discrepancies, the Kenya Wildlife Service has ordered further tests. The investigation has expanded to include a broader environmental sweep to determine if the herd was exposed to a shared contaminant.
Amboseli Ecosystem and Scale of Loss
The deaths occurred in a landscape world-renowned for its savannahs and views of Mount Kilimanjaro. The impact is particularly acute given the local population; as of 2025, there were more than 2,000 elephants in the Amboseli ecosystem, according to BBC News as cited by CBS News.
While Kenya has a history of elephant poisonings linked to poaching and human-wildlife conflict, BBC News reported that this is the first time in decades that the region has seen elephant deaths on this scale.
Wildlife officials have moved to address public concern regarding the nature of the illness. The authorities stated there is currently no evidence that the condition affecting the elephants could be transmitted to humans.
Unresolved Questions in the Investigation
Despite the ongoing probe, several critical gaps remain. While the University of Nairobi found a potential toxin, the specific identity of that substance has not been named in the official statements. Furthermore, the Kenya Wildlife Service has noted there is currently no evidence pointing to a single cause of death, BBC News reported.
The investigation remains active as officials await the results of the water source analyses and the secondary laboratory tests.
