Career-Best Season and Cultural Shift in Phoenix
The contract follows the most productive campaign of Brooks’ nine-year professional career. In his first season with the Suns after being acquired from the Houston Rockets in the blockbuster trade involving Kevin Durant, Brooks averaged a career-high 20.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.8 assists over 56 starts. He shot 43.5 percent from the field and 34.4 percent from beyond the arc.
Beyond his offensive production, team leadership credited Brooks with helping establish a hard-nosed, two-way culture under coach Jordan Ott. His gritty style of play, physical defense, and competitive antagonist persona made him an instant fan favorite.
USA Today noted that Brooks was previously drafted in the second round of the 2017 draft by the Rockets, spent six seasons with the Memphis Grizzlies, and played two seasons with Houston before arriving in Phoenix. His strong play last season earned him early All-Star consideration and helped spark a 45-win campaign that returned the franchise to the postseason.
Overcoming Injuries and Playoff Return
Brooks’ stellar season faced adversity on February 21, when he suffered a fractured left hand during a double-overtime win against the Orlando Magic. The injury sidelined him for 18 games. During his recovery, Brooks was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in Scottsdale on March 6. Despite the setback, he received overwhelming local support, drawing thousands of fans to a March 27 meet-and-greet at the Arizona Mills shopping center.
Brooks returned for the end of the regular season, helping Phoenix advance through the Play-In Tournament with a win over the Golden State Warriors before the team fell in a first-round playoff sweep to the Oklahoma City Thunder. During the postseason series, Brooks led the Suns in scoring with 26 points per game and shot a career-best 43.8 percent from 3-pointers.
Roster Continuity and Front Office Strategy
The extension is part of a broader offseason strategy by management to maintain roster continuity. Alongside securing Brooks, the Suns have signed Collin Gillespie, Mark Williams, and Jordan Goodwin to multiyear contracts, and acquired Miles Bridges and Luke Kennard. With the new deal in place, Brooks joins a core under team control beyond the 2027–28 season that includes Devin Booker and Khaman Maluach, as the franchise shifts into a new era under general manager Brian Gregory.
