Emergency Response at Vrazhdebna and the Northern Speed Tangent
Nine fire engines deployed to the Vrazhdebna district in Sofia after dry grass and low vegetation caught fire near the Northern Speed Tangent. According to the General Directorate for Fire Safety and Population Protection, the emergency call arrived at 17:34.
Initial dispatch included five firefighting crews. Strong winds and rapid spread forced authorities to reinforce the operation with four additional vehicles, bringing the total response force to nine engines. Heavy construction equipment parked nearby aided the effort, as excavators dug protective trenches to halt the advance of the flames.
Thick smoke from the blaze drifted across multiple areas of the capital, remaining visible near Sofia’s Vasil Levski Airport, Botevgradsko Shose Boulevard, and the Northern Speed Tangent. Firefighting teams worked directly on the ground to cut firebreaks and suppress individual hot spots.
Simultaneous Wildfires Strain Resources Across Bulgaria
The Sofia incident unfolded alongside another large-scale emergency near the 69th kilometer of the Trakia Motorway, close to the village of Slavovitsa and the turnoff for Velingrad. That fire also began in dry grass before high winds pushed the flames across vineyards and over parts of the motorway.
Two Cougar military helicopters joined ground crews, volunteers, and forestry workers from the South Central State Enterprise in battling the Trakia Motorway fire. These incidents followed a separate fire that occurred days prior at the Vrana Park-Museum.
Additional Incidents Reported Across the Capital
Separate emergency reporting noted a distinct fire outbreak near the Moderno Predgradie district in Sofia, where dense clouds of black smoke near the Lyulin housing estate were visible from distant neighborhoods. Fire crews responded immediately to contain the flames, while local officials continued working to determine the cause, assess property damage, and verify whether any injuries occurred.
