Football season in Green Bay kicked off in earnest under the Friday night lights as Packers Family Night, Presented by UW Health Kids, brought a full slate of activities to Lambeau Field and the neighboring Titletown district. The mid-summer tradition drew a crowd exceeding 60,000 supporters eager to watch the team run through situational team drills that are otherwise closed to public recording during training camp.
I think there’s a couple teams out there that have opportunities in their stadiums where a lot of people come to watch, but I’ve never experienced anything like this,
eighth-year head coach Matt LaFleur said. It’s so good for our young players. It’s really the first time you’re in our stadium.
Fifteen Players Held Out as Green Bay Manages Precautionary Injuries
While the atmosphere inside the stadium mirrored a regular-season contest, the roster on the field was missing significant depth. The coaching staff adopted a hyper-conservative approach with several key starters and athletes recovering from major injuries or minor setbacks.
Among those sidelined were tight end Tucker Kraft, defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt, offensive lineman Zach Bako-Bewele, and running back Josh Jacobs, who was dealing with a groin injury that also kept him out of the preceding Thursday practice. Micah Parsons remained on the physically unable to perform list during his recovery from a torn ACL, while cornerback Carrington Valentine was held out due to a hamstring injury.
Rookies and Reserves Step Into Spotlight During Lambeau Scrimmage
The absences forced a shuffle across multiple position groups, giving young prospects and recent draft picks a valuable showcase in front of the massive home crowd. Rookie cornerback Brandon Cisse stepped into a prime role with the starting defense in place of the injured Valentine, earning praise from teammates for his rapid grasp of the playbook and technical poise.
He doesn’t look like he’s panicking when he’s going up against the first group.
On the offensive side, quarterback Jordan Love connected with second-year receiver Matthew Golden on a 52-yard touchdown pass against safety Javon Bullard, highlighting the passing game’s explosive moments during the evening.
Trey Smack Responds With Steady Kicking Performance
Special teams execution remained a major focal point for the franchise following high-profile kicking struggles in previous seasons. Rookie kicker Trey Smack entered Family Night looking to steady his footing after opening training camp making just 8 of his first 13 field goal attempts, an early stretch that prompted him to delete all of his social media accounts except Instagram to block out external scrutiny.
