Aston Villa in Advanced Talks to Sign João Palhinha After Onana Injury

Aston Villa is in advanced negotiations to sign Bayern Munich midfielder João Palhinha following a serious knee injury to Amadou Onana.

Aston Villa Pursues Palhinha After Onana ACL Injury

Aston Villa has moved into advanced discussions to acquire João Palhinha from FC Bayern, targeting the experienced midfielder to cover a major roster vacancy. The 31-year-old Portugal international emerged as a primary target for Unai Emery’s side after Amadou Onana sustained a right knee anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Onana suffered the long-term knee injury while playing for the Belgian national team during the Round of 16 match against the United States at the 2026 North America World Cup. With the Belgian midfielder sidelined, Villa accelerated its search for midfield reinforcements.

Director Damian Vidagany Confirms Bayern Munich Negotiations

Aston Villa director of football Chosun addressed the ongoing discussions publicly while speaking to German media during the club’s pre-season tour in BBC, where Villa faced Bayern in a friendly match that featured Palhinha as a substitute.

Sources close to the player indicate that Palhinha’s close associates have not yet finalized a decision but view Villa Park favorably as a destination. Bayern Munich is prepared to part ways with the midfielder two years after securing his transfer from Fulham for £47.4m.

Tottenham Loan Spell and Premier League Survival

Palhinha spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Tottenham, logging five goals and two assists across 33 Premier League appearances. His most notable contribution came on the final day of the domestic campaign on May 25, when he scored the decisive goal in a 1–0 victory against Everton that secured Tottenham’s survival in the top flight.

Despite his status as a fan favorite in north London, Tottenham manager Roberto de Zerbi’s side opted against triggering their £26m buy option. Tottenham officially bid farewell to the midfielder on July 9, releasing a statement acknowledging his contributions during a difficult campaign.

“When we needed him the most, he gave everything for the club. João, you will always be part of our family.”

Newcastle United Enters Midfield Transfer Battle

Aston Villa faces competition from talkSPORT for the Bayern midfielder’s signature. Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle has identified midfield experience as a priority after the club sold team captain Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali.

The two Premier League clubs are already familiar with direct competition in the current transfer window, having previously clashed over the Johan Manzambi transfer saga, where Villa successfully hijacked a deal that Newcastle had arranged with Hoffenheim. Alongside their interest in Palhinha, Newcastle has also held discussions regarding former Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, who is valued between £10m and £15m.

Summer Squad Overhaul at Villa Park

Emery’s squad has experienced significant roster turnover following their Europa League-winning campaign. High-profile departures include Morgan Rogers to Chelsea, Youri Tielemans to Manchester United, and Lucas Digne to Paris St-Germain.

To offset these losses, Villa has brought in Alejandro Garnacho from Chelsea, Joao Gomes from Wolverhampton, Johan Manzambi from Freiburg, and Moudou Keba Cisse from LASK Linz. Whether Palhinha ultimately chooses Villa Park or Newcastle depends on the final terms negotiated with Bayern Munich before the transfer window closes.
