Building on similar industry inquiries conducted by organizations like the Game Developers Conference (GDC) and Skillsearch, the latest speaker survey highlights a persistent fracture between expected productivity gains and the front-line rejection of automated tools. While debate over creative ethics and workflow integration continues to polarize teams worldwide, a clear majority of respondents agree that AI is actively altering the production landscape regardless of personal stance.
When participants were asked to identify which technological or market shift will exert the most influence over the next three years, 47 percent of developers pointed directly to AI-assisted development. That figure places generative tools far ahead of other pressing industry concerns, such as hardware and RAM supply constraints, which were cited by 28 percent of respondents.
Where Developers Find Value—and Where They Draw the Line
Views on artificial intelligence shift dramatically depending on the specific department involved, revealing stark contrasts in how different studio roles interact with the technology. According to the survey data, 34 percent of developers view coding and production as the primary domain where AI provides genuine utility.
Conversely, the pushback against automated tools remains formidable. Exactly 30 percent of respondents stated they want to see as little artificial intelligence used in game development as possible. Resistance is particularly pronounced within creative sectors directly exposed to generative systems. Support drops sharply for management and administration at 12 percent, quality assurance and testing at 7 percent, art and animation at 4 percent, localization at 3 percent, marketing and communication at 2 percent, and narrative design at just 1 percent.
These dividing lines extend directly into workforce projections. Rather than pointing toward a unified outcome, 36 percent of surveyed developers believe AI will primarily transform existing job roles rather than eliminate positions. Meanwhile, 33 percent anticipate that automated tools will lead to smaller team sizes, 14 percent expect an increase in individual output per person, and 17 percent foresee no net effect on headcount.
Broader Industry Pressures and Shifting Market Realities
Beyond technology adoption, studios face a complex web of economic hurdles. When asked to name the biggest challenges currently facing the sector, participants most frequently pointed to economic uncertainty, followed closely by market saturation, discoverability crises, and rising development costs. Recruitment challenges and monetization hurdles round out the list of day-to-day obstacles for modern teams.
To navigate these financial pressures, market expectations for studio structures are shifting. An overwhelming 37 percent of respondents anticipate that smaller, more agile teams will define the primary opportunities over the next three years. These agile structures place well ahead of alternative strategies like new publishing models, community building initiatives, and emerging geographic markets.
Regarding commercial strategies, traditional digital and physical premium games remain the favored business model at 29 percent. Live service models follow closely at 24 percent, with free-to-play structures incorporating microtransactions claiming 21 percent of developer preference. Community-funded projects, ad-supported free-to-play games, and subscription models account for the remaining segments.
Tackling the Discoverability Crisis
While software automation commands headlines, developers note that getting games noticed by players remains a more immediate, practical obstacle. Traditional word-of-mouth and informal networks dominate how players find new titles, far outpacing algorithm-driven store recommendations and digital storefront showcases.
To improve visibility in an increasingly crowded marketplace, 32 percent of developers call for greater transparency in platform algorithms. Additional recommendations include improved store curation, enhanced visibility via content creators and influencers, and increased editorial promotion from storefront operators.
Interestingly, when asked which professional skill will become the most sought-after in the near future, technical leadership claimed the top spot at 27 percent. Technical programming followed at 19 percent, while art and design, AI culture, community management, production, and narrative skills filled out the remaining priorities.
As the video game industry moves forward, artificial intelligence functions less as an isolated novelty and more as an accelerator of existing economic and structural tensions. Studios are no longer debating whether automated tools will arrive, but rather negotiating the exact boundaries where they are willing to grant them a foothold.
