Leeds Rhinos winger Alfie Edgell has been officially ruled out for the remainder of the Super League season after sustaining a quad injury during a match against Wakefield Trinity, according to reporting by Yahoo Sports. The 22-year-old suffered the setback while scoring a disallowed try last weekend, though he played through the pain for the final half hour of the contest.
Edgell’s premature end to the campaign adds to a difficult year of fitness battles for the player. He previously missed the opening five months of the current season due to a thigh issue.
Leeds head coach Brad Arthur discussed the physical toll and the decision to keep Edgell on the field.
Brad Arthur Assesses Edgell’s Injury and Tough Resilience
Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds, head coach Brad Arthur explained that while Edgell could not fully stride out, his presence on the pitch was vital during the closing stages of the fixture. “He couldn’t stride out but he knew he needed to stay out there for us the other night,” Arthur told BBC Radio Leeds, as reported by Yahoo Sports. “He was able to play that remaining 30 minutes of the second half but unfortunately for him the season is done.”
“He’s a tough kid, he has been there before, he’ll rehab it and will go again,” Arthur stated. “His luck will change at some stage, if he makes it change in terms of just staying strong. It can’t happen to him forever. He is only young, he has plenty of time.”
The Leeds head coach also underlined the organization’s commitment to Edgell’s ongoing development, pointing out that contract status is not a pressing concern for the sidelined youngster. “The club has invested their time in him. It’s not like he’s playing for a contract. He can just be patient, rehab it, and do all the right things and get another chance next year,” Arthur added.
Squad Boost as Ryan Hall Returns for Leigh Leopards Clash
While Edgell faces a spell on the sidelines, the Rhinos have received a boost ahead of their upcoming fixture. Veteran wing Ryan Hall is set to make his return for the home game against the Leigh Leopards on Thursday.
Hall’s inclusion provides stability to the flanks after the veteran spent a month recovering from a foot injury. His return arrives as the team navigates the Super League schedule.
The Rhinos host the Leigh Leopards on Thursday night, where official pre-match team sheets and tactical updates will be released by the club ahead of kickoff.
