University of Glasgow Study Links Interrupted Sitting to Lower Cancer Death Risk

Taking brief breaks for physical activity throughout the day may reduce the risk of cancer death, according to a new observational study led by researchers from the University of Glasgow. The research, published in the journal PLOS Medicine, suggests that the way people sit—specifically whether they interrupt prolonged periods of inactivity—is a critical factor in health outcomes.

The Impact of Prolonged Sitting

The study defined prolonged sedentary behavior as any period lasting at least 30 minutes during which at least 90% of the time was spent sitting, reclining, or lying down. Researchers found that this behavior is an independent health risk, associating it with higher rates of obesity-related cancers, type 2 diabetes-related cancers, overall cancer incidence, and cancer mortality.

According to the findings, every additional hour per day of prolonged sedentary behavior was associated with a 10% increase in the risk of cancer death. The researchers noted that the health effects of sedentary behavior may depend not only on the total amount of time spent inactive but also on whether that time is accumulated in long bouts or interrupted by activity.

Benefits of Interrupted Sitting

The study found that interrupted sitting—defined as sessions lasting fewer than 30 minutes or those broken up by brief periods of physical activity—was linked to a lower risk of cancer death. The degree of risk reduction varied based on the intensity of the activity used to replace sitting time:

  • Vigorous activity: Replacing just five minutes of sitting with vigorous activity, such as playing basketball or running, was associated with a 22% lower risk of cancer death.
  • Light activity: Replacing one hour of sitting with light physical activity, such as washing dishes, ironing a shirt, or walking at a low speed, was associated with a 12% lower risk.
  • Moderate activity: Replacing 30 minutes of sitting with moderate exercise, such as brisk walking or mopping, was linked to an 8% lower risk.

Additionally, other strategies to reduce the risk of at least 13 types of cancer by as much as 7% include standing up from a couch or desk for 30 seconds or jogging up and down steps for three minutes.

Study Methodology and Limitations

To gather data, researchers monitored 91,292 volunteer participants in the U.K. over approximately 12 years. For one week, these volunteers wore wrist-worn movement-tracking devices to record their sedentary habits.

Despite the findings, researchers cautioned that the study cannot prove causality. They noted several limitations, including the possibility that the volunteers may not represent the wider population. Furthermore, the activity monitors only captured behavior over a limited period and did not provide the specific context of the sedentary behavior, such as whether the participant was driving, viewing television, or working.

Global Context of Physical Inactivity

The authors of the study highlighted that sedentary behavior accounts for approximately 55% of waking time for both adults and children, based on self-reported data. While countries agreed to a global target at the 2018 World Health Assembly to reduce physical inactivity by 15% by 2030 (compared to 2010), the World Health Organization warns that nations are off-track.

The WHO warned in 2024 that inactivity levels are projected to rise to 35% by 2030. This trend is particularly evident among people over 60 and women, the latter of whom experience global inactivity rates of 34% compared to 29% for men. The researchers emphasized that while health guidelines often prioritize vigorous or moderate exercise, light movement should not be ignored.
