The potential policy framework has immediately ignited a fierce political dispute, drawing sharp criticism from Samajwadi Party national president Akhilesh Yadav while setting the stage for a high-stakes electoral battle in India’s most populous state.
According to reports covered by India TV News, the proposed welfare plan under consideration by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government could distribute financial aid totaling Rs 50,000 to eligible women. Under the rumored structure of the scheme, beneficiaries would reportedly receive an initial installment of Rs 20,000 prior to the upcoming state polls, with the remaining balance disbursed in three subsequent installments of Rs 10,000 each if the ruling party retains power.
Legislative Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh are scheduled to take place in February and March 2027 to elect all 403 members of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, elevating the strategic importance of broad-based social welfare announcements. As political parties position themselves for the campaign trail, cash transfer schemes and targeted economic aid have emerged as central instruments for mobilizing voters.
Political Clash Over Proposed Women Welfare Schemes
Reacting sharply to reports of the administration’s deliberations, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav dismissed the rumored initiative as an election-season gimmick, or “jumla,” designed to secure votes through financial inducement. In statements highlighted by Deccan Herald, Yadav alleged that the BJP government has relied heavily on monetary resources rather than governance performance as public trust has eroded.
Yadav claimed that the ruling administration had neglected women’s welfare over the past decade, arguing that an annual allocation of Rs 50,000 over ten years would amount to Rs 5 lakh per beneficiary. Characterizing the rumored Rs 20,000 pre-election payout as a fraction of that total, Yadav asserted that the proposed amount represents only four percent of what he contends is rightfully owed to the state’s women, according to reporting by India TV News.
“Look at it this way, the Rs 50,000 per year that the BJP government is talking about giving today could have been given over the last 10 years as well, but it was not,” Yadav said in public remarks reported by India TV News. He further alleged that financial assistance models implemented by the BJP in other states have faced administrative hurdles, leaving some recipients indebted or entangled in legal disputes when attempting to navigate repayment terms.
Samajwadi Party Counters With Higher Financial Pledge
Seeking to outbid the ruling administration’s rumored welfare rollout, the Samajwadi Party leadership has reiterated a counter-pledge for female voters across the state. Yadav announced that if his party forms the government following the 2027 assembly elections, it will institute a direct financial assistance framework starting at Rs 40,000 annually, with incremental yearly increases.
