Emergency crews battled a complex residential fire on Friday afternoon that destroyed a full row of townhouses and damaged ten apartments across an adjacent structure, sending four individuals to hospitals for medical care. According to local emergency services, the emergency alarm alerting police and rescue teams to the severe blaze was received around 1 p.m. local time on Friday.
By 5:30 p.m., firefighting operations involved rescue resources from nine different stations deployed to contain the spreading flames. Pyar Andersson, a press spokesperson for the Greater Stockholm Fire Brigade, detailed the scope of the structural damage to reporters. “The one row with ten households has burned down to the foundation,” Andersson said, noting that ten additional apartments in a separate neighboring row sustained varying degrees of structural impact.
Smoke from the townhouse fire could be seen from a long distance away as emergency units arrived. Incident Commander Daniel Tezera reported that the fire was already fully developed in the townhouse row by the time the first suppression units reached the scene. Firefighters utilized specialized equipment, including a crane truck ordered to assist with extinguishing flames in the roof.
“We are working on the townhouse that it has spread to and limiting and saving as much as we can,” Tezera stated regarding the challenging tactical situation. “It is a very complex fire and it requires a lot of resources.” By 5:30 p.m., the incident commander confirmed the fire remained uncontained, though operational conditions had improved significantly compared to the initial hours of the response.
Medical Response and Hospitalizations
Ambulance personnel triaged individuals at the scene, directing medical transport for four people. Enhanced medical duty officer Anders Eklund provided details regarding the patient transfers. “They had inhaled smoke and have now been taken to the hospital in Västerås,” Eklund explained concerning three patients treated for minor smoke inhalation. “We have also driven a man with heart problems to the emergency room in Köping.”
Earlier in the day, there were reports suggesting one person remained unaccounted for in connection with the fire. However, reporters on the ground with public broadcaster SVT confirmed that the missing individual was subsequently located safe and sound.
Police established a wide security perimeter around the neighborhood to keep bystanders clear and maintain unobstructed access for emergency vehicles. Maria Hall, a police press spokesperson, issued a public safety plea as firefighters continued their work. “We want to urge people not to go there,” Hall said, instructing the public to stay away from the cordoned zone.
Arson Investigation and Current Status
Law enforcement authorities launched a formal investigation into the origin and cause of the blaze, registering the criminal classification as arson. Police secured the surrounding neighborhood and conducted witness interviews on site.
By 7 p.m., multiple firefighting units remained stationed at the property, shifting their primary tactical focus toward protecting and saving the three outermost housing units in the row. The rescue service reported that the extensive suppression effort had yielded positive results by evening, establishing an encouraging operational outlook despite uncertainty regarding how long crews would need to remain stationed at the site.
