The most expensive cows in the world graze on Romanian land. Wagyu cattle with Japanese DNA, known for their marbled meat appearance and intense taste, have also reached us. Farmers pay hard money to care for them. It offers them luxurious, stress-free conditions and hydrates them with beer. If it comes directly from the Land of the Rising Sun, a kilogram of premium meat ends up costing a thousand euros, but in farms in Romania, the kilogram starts at around 400 lei.

Wagyu cows are known for their peaceful temperament

Iulia Pop, Observer reporter: Wagyu cows are recognized for their peaceful temperament which is mainly due to the conditions in which they are raised, of absolute well-being and without stress. Only the stable where I stay has humidity sensors and special fans, and the water I drink, a controlled temperature of exactly 14 degrees Celsius.

For Raimond it was love at first taste.

Raimond Rusu, farm owner: Initially, I couldn’t even believe it was beef. You can’t tell the difference until you try it.

Romanians began to discover quality wine

In recent years, Romanians have begun to discover quality beef, and butchers’ windows are full. The meat is rich in Omega 3, Omega 6, helps blood coagulation and supports vision.

Marius Bibarț, butcher shop owner: What matters is that the fat is intramuscular. During cooking, they will melt and provide a much tenderer, tastier and more aromatic meat.

Remus Tomici, chef: It is best cooked on a stove or in a pan, the temperature must be low. It contains a lot of fat that melts at a lower point than classic beef fat.

Iulia Pop, Observer reporter: A kilogram of Wagyu beef can cost 900-1,000 lei. And it can reach up to 1000 euros if it comes directly from Japan. But, until it lands on the plates, Romanians refine their tastes and have learned to appreciate quality beef.
