In Kostelní Lhota, Nymburk, on Sunday afternoon, the driver of a car drove onto the sidewalk, hitting four pedestrians. He must have fallen asleep before. Rescuers transported a woman and a child with moderate to serious injuries to Prague hospitals by helicopter. Three other people, including the driver of the car, suffered moderate injuries. This follows from information from emergency service and police spokespeople.

The accident happened at 5:45 p.m., according to police. “The driver of the car was driving in the direction from Sadská to Poděbrady and in Kostelní Lhota, for reasons that have not been determined, drove right onto the sidewalk, where he hit four pedestrians and then crashed into a family home,” police spokeswoman Michaela Richterová told ČTK. According to initial information, he fell asleep behind the wheel, the spokeswoman added. The police will continue to investigate the circumstances of the accident.

“There were a total of five injured people, a woman and a child were transported by air to Prague hospitals by paramedics, the other three injured by land to hospitals in Prague and Nymburk,” rescue service spokesman Marek Hylebrant told ČTK.

Health problems and slippers have contributed to similar accidents

In recent years, there have been several similar accidents where a car or other means of transport ran into pedestrians on the sidewalk or at a bus stop. In June 2020, a bus crashed into a bus stop near which people were standing at the Slánské bus station. His driver was wearing inappropriate shoes, house slippers. In March 2021, a van drove into the Military Hospital tram stop in Prague 6 and hit several people. Paramedics treated six people, two of whom ended up seriously injured in the nearby Central Military Hospital. The 50-year-old van driver apparently had health problems just before the accident, he probably lost consciousness, he was not seriously injured.

A month later, a car drove into people at high speed in front of one of the gates of Škoda Auto in Mladá Boleslav. Three people were injured, one woman seriously. The driver of the car was detained by the police, according to the police, the probable cause was his medical indisposition.
