Five out of six power plants of Ukraine’s largest private energy company DTEK have been damaged or destroyed in Russian attacks over the past two weeks. Repairs can take up to 18 months. According to , the head of the DTEK company, Dmytro Sacharuk, stated this on Ukrainian state television.

The DTEK company covers about a quarter of the country’s needs. Since the beginning of the Russian invasion more than two years ago, the company has witnessed repeated attacks on its thermal power plants and other facilities by Russian missiles, drones and artillery.

Sakharuk said on television that the March 22 and 29 attacks hit the production of thermal and hydropower plants in almost all regions and destroyed distribution facilities.

“To be specific, five of our six power plants were seriously damaged, some units were destroyed, some were half or more damaged,” he said. “It concerns the western and central regions, and both the equipment necessary for the production of electricity and for transmission from the power plant to the grid were damaged,” he added.

According to him, DTEK suffered losses of USD 300 million (seven billion CZK) on the equipment alone. “We found that 80 percent of the available production capacity is not working now.”

Sacharuk added that DTEK spent $110 million last year to restore ten blocks hit by Russian attacks. Two thirds of them are now destroyed again. Repairs will require months, in some cases up to a year and a half.
