The man says that he has been searching for his true vocation for many years and now he has realized that creating garden design is a very important part of his life. The work on Arūnas garden started back in September 2023, but the man does not hide that he has many more plans.

“I realized that I wanted to create something fabulous. Like many expats in a foreign country, I had to rent housing, which is why I became interested in gardening. I bought all the plants and kept them in pots, because we were already in the process of getting our own home,” Arūnas begins.

An empty lawn is like a white sheet of paper

A. Macijauskas admits that the garden area of the new house was only covered with lawn. Arūnas says that he hesitated for a long time about the theme of the garden project, but he soon realized that the Japanese style is perfect for the country’s climate.

And great passion and endless desire to create something beautiful motivated him not to stop.

“Then I decided that the empty lawn is like a canvas for the fulfillment of my fantasies. I have been creating my own in my mind for a long time the gardenbut had his heart set on a Japanese style that suited the UK climate.

The process of renovating a garden takes a long time, but to have and nurture a garden, the work never ends. I did it in 8 months – I couldn’t do it faster because I worked in my free time – on weekends after work”, says the man from Šiauliai who created the impressive garden design.

Arūnas reveals that the garden was empty – only grass and large brick walls, which became the biggest challenge in the realization of the project.

“I wanted to cover as much of the garden space as possible and make it as natural as possible.” The plot is not ideal, so we had to improvise: it is very difficult to dig clay, full of stones, and the height of the fence is a very big challenge, not only visually, but also considering the arrangement of the plants

We had to dig much bigger holes and fill them with sand in order to avoid root rot due to poor drainage. Due to the lack of space and the desire to fit as much greenery as possible in a small area, we chose small plants suitable for forming,” says Arūnas.

Loved this type of tree

According to the man, he is completely immersed in the obsession with Japanese maples, which is getting out of control. The man jokes that many trees of this species have to be kept in pots and their growth stunted due to lack of land.

“I currently have 35 Japanese maples. I plan to have more of these trees, but they are extremely difficult to obtain as they are in short supply in England. Having to look for them all over the UK has become the biggest challenge.

Bonsai trees are a big inspiration for me. They encourage development and learning to grow and shape them.

In our garden, we mix evergreens with leafless plants to make them look amazing all season long. Japanese maples change their colors a lot throughout the season, which makes the garden unique and interesting for any enthusiast’s eyes,” he says.

The plans include not only a waterfall or a flowing river

Arūnas does not hide his enthusiasm and says that this stage of the garden is only the beginning of the project. The plans include a waterfall, a flowing river, Bonsai trees siena.

“All that you see is just a visual beginning, because we started building this garden only 8 months ago. This would be a very short time for the full implementation of the project – so there are many details to fix.

After my wife and I just moved into our newly built house, we decided that she would be in charge of the interior design and I would be in charge of the garden. There is no question as to who won the bigger part of the budget,” laughs Arūnas.

The man reveals that the garden is dominated by such plants as: azalea, Japanese maples (mikawa yatsubusa, shishi gashira, full moon, beni maiko, sango kaku, etc.):

“The most sought-after species are Japanese princess, red panda and ghost collections.”

Arūnas says that he is satisfied with his work so far, but he sees a lot of solutions that need to be corrected: “We will implement everything in the near future. Garden creativity is fascinating because there are no limits to creativity and self-expression.

We have planted some plants that are too big for this garden, so we plan to change them. We are very happy with solutions such as color matching, mirror and arch improvisation.”
