Indonesia has felt it

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said that Indonesia’s territory is not free from the impact of the global climate crisis.

Dwikorita Karnawati, Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), said climate change covers various aspects.

“Including increasing global temperatures, changes in rainfall patterns, rising sea levels, as well as the impact on the environment and humans,” said Dwikorita on the official BMKG website, quoted on Sunday (5/5/2024).

A concrete example of climate change in Indonesia is the melting of glaciers or tropical ice sheets in Puncak Jaya, Papua. The area of ​​eternal snow cover at an altitude of 4,884 meters above sea level has shrunk by 98%, from 19.23 square kilometers in 1850 to only 0.23 square kilometers in April 2022.

Another proof is that Indonesia’s temperature is increasing every day. According to Dwikorita, world temperatures are currently approaching the limit agreed upon in the COP21 Paris Agreement on December 12, 0215.

At that time, the whole world agreed to limit the increase in global average temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius. However, in fact, currently the temperature increase is accelerating and has reached an increase of 1.45 degrees Celsius above the average temperature in pre-industrial times.

According to BMKG records, the rate of temperature increase in Indonesia has reached 0.15 degrees Celsius per decade.

Dwikorita explained, referring to Bappenas data, climate change has the potential to reduce Indonesia’s rice production by 1.13 million tonnes and 1.89 million tonnes. Then, agricultural land covering 2,256 hectares of rice fields is also threatened by drought.
