At the Hôpitaux du Léman, in the capital of Chablais, the medical team offers the installation of an implantable port under the arm to improve the quality of life of its patients suffering from cancer.

The Hôpitaux du Léman improve the quality of life of cancer patients by offering the installation of an implantable port under the arm.

More discreet and aesthetic than in its classic location, in the thorax, this pose limits stigma and makes the catheter, the implantable chamber and the scar less visible. In addition, it makes daily life easier for patients by making all physical activities possible and avoiding the discomfort caused by seat belts, bra straps or backpack straps.

The risks of serious complications are also reduced, in particular those of pulmonary perforation and air embolism. Only a hematoma in the arm is possible in 30% of cases.

Treating cancer with chemotherapy requires very regular injections or intravenous punctures. To improve patient comfort and preserve their venous capital, the Léman Hospitals have structured a dedicated care sector. Dr Pascal Fangio, anesthesiologist-resuscitator at Hôpitaux du Léman, worked with his team to structure the patient journey in order to offer a quick appointment and personalized support. The request for installation can be made both by hospital services and by external prescribers (general practitioners, public or private health or medico-social establishments). Care is provided on an outpatient basis and patients return home the same day. The installation is carried out in the operating room in a dedicated room under local anesthesia without the need to fast, in 45 minutes.
