New Delhi: The Delhi High Court dismissed four petitions by the Congress seeking to stop the reassessment of income tax. The Congress approached the Delhi High Court challenging the tax reassessment for the financial years 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17. The court upheld the Income Tax Department’s action and rejected the Congress’ petition. A division bench comprising Justice Yashwant Verma and Justice Purushindra Kumar Kaurav dismissed the petitions.

On the 22nd, the Congress petitions challenging the tax reassessment for the financial years 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21 were also rejected by the court. The Income Tax Department had informed the court that the Congress has to pay more than Rs 520 crore in taxes. The Congress approached the High Court after approaching the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal earlier but it was not favoured.

As the Lok Sabha elections have been announced, the High Court’s action is a big setback for the Congress. With the rejection of the petition, it is indicated that the frozen bank accounts of the Congress will not be functional anytime soon. National leaders and others say that the party is in a severe financial crisis.
