A sixty-year-old who was leaving a Parisian synagogue this Friday, March 1, was beaten and insulted as a “dirty Jew.” The Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, denounced an “unspeakable act”.

Friday March 1 at 5:30 p.m. rue des Orteaux, in the 20th arrondissement of Paris, an octogenarian, “wearing a kippah”, was leaving a synagogue and was attacked by a man.

The attacker insulted the victim as a “dirty Jew”, punched and kicked him “several times”, before fleeing “on foot”, police sources told AFP. The sixty-year-old was taken to hospital.

“A new anti-Semitic attack took place in Paris last night. Everything is being done to find the author of this unspeakable act,” reacted on X the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, this Saturday.

Reinforced protection measures

In a telegram addressed to prefects and senior officials responsible for ensuring internal security, Gérald Darmanin requested the strengthening of protection measures for the Jewish community, particularly around schools and places of worship, Friday March 1.

This request came after the distribution of deadly humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip last Thursday, February 29. As a crowd of Palestinians rushed a food aid convoy, the Hamas health ministry accused the Israeli army of killing 118 people by shooting at starving Gazans.

For its part, the Israeli army spoke of a “stampede” during which “dozens of Gazans were injured and killed”.
