In May 2015, newlyweds Ian Diaz and Angela Connell Diaz appeared to live a postcard-worthy life in a suburban condo in Anaheim, California, situated minutes from Disneyland, which was important to Ian as a confirmed Disney adult. According to Ian’s friend of 20 years, Leslie, this was all he wanted. Ian Diaz, a U.S. marshal deputy, and Angela, who was expecting twins, soon found their lives upended by a relentless barrage of digital harassment. Threatening emails arrived from an account named “Lilithistruth,” sending messages that targeted Angela’s life, her home, and her unborn children with images of corpses and aborted fetuses.
The harassment escalated sharply when the mysterious sender replied to a Craigslist advertisement suggesting Angela was open to a “rape fantasy” inside the Diaz condo. When a stranger arrived at the residence in June 2016, the couple called 911. Angela reported to officers that a man wearing a black ski mask had shoved her against a wall and strangled her. For the first chapter of A Toxic Love Story, this seems to be the narrative unfurling, playing on the sexist trope of an allegedly crazy ex-girlfriend most recently resurfaced in Focus Features’ indie hit Obsession.
The Wrongful Arrest and the $1 Million Bail of Michelle Hadley
Police focused their investigation on Ian Diaz’s ex-girlfriend, Michelle Hadley. In an interview with police heard in the documentary, Hadley seems to admit to writing the Lilith emails. Anaheim authorities arrested Hadley, and she was held for 88 days on a million-dollar bond while she faced felony charges.
Hadley served 88 days in prison before being exonerated in January 2017. The ex-girlfriend ultimately became a central voice telling her side of the story in the documentary, recounting the emotional devastation of her ordeal after the police uncovered another suspect.

Tracing the history back, Michelle Hadley and Ian Diaz met on an online dating site in August 2013. Diaz was Hadley’s second serious relationship—the first was with her high school sweetheart—and the two quickly became a love match. After getting engaged, the couple purchased a condo near Disneyland in Anaheim, California, in May 2015, with Hadley making the down payment while Diaz made regular mortgage payments, as she stated in the documentary. As their relationship progressed, Diaz allegedly began to put pressure on Hadley, asking her to have sex with another man while he watched, setting expectations for how she dressed, asking her to wear fake nails, and installing a camera facing the kitchen. She also alleged that Diaz was very unpredictable with his behaviors, taking her out for an extravagant dinner one day only to be aggressive and slam the brakes of the car on the next.
