When it comes to Ukraine in September 2023, tank M1A1 Abrams from the United States is predicted to help fight the Russian invasion. However, this so-called modern and sophisticated tank seems to be experiencing difficulties, and is even considered a failure.

According to two unnamed US military officials speaking to the Associated Press, Ukraine has withdrawn its Abrams main tanks from the Ukrainian battlefield after they proved incapable of dealing with the threat of Russian drones.

Five of the 31 American Abrams units sent to Ukraine have been destroyed in Russian attacks. These tanks, which cost around USD 10 million each, along with other armored platforms supplied by NATO allies, failed to have the decisive impact on the battlefield that Ukraine had hoped for.

Abrams has apparently become a victim of the mass use of drones on the Ukrainian battlefield. The constant presence of drones in the air has complicated Abrams’ movements.

Christopher Grady, vice chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, confirmed the decision to remove the tanks from the front lines. “When you think about how the fight has evolved, mass armored vehicles in an environment where unmanned aerial systems are ubiquitous could be risky,” Grady said.

Even though Abrams has various advantages. Its powerful gas turbine engine can carry the 60-tonne M1A1 up to 70 kilometers per hour. The main weapon fires accurately while moving.

The heavy armor provides protection against anti-tank weapons. The design also emphasized the crew’s survivability. American tanks are much heavier armored than Russian tanks. During the Gulf War, the US military recorded several instances of enemy fire ricocheting off the tank.

But even though the Abrams is tough and powerful, that doesn’t mean this tank can’t be stopped. It is potentially vulnerable to some of the threats that have disabled some Leopard and Challenger tanks in Ukraine, such as anti-tank mines, missiles, artillery and drones. Not all tank areas are protected equally. It has now been proven that Abrams is seriously threatened by Russian drone attacks.

Russia itself previously stated that the M1 Abrams would catch fire in the conflict in Ukraine. “All this does not in any way affect the essence of special military operations and their results. They will also burn,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov some time ago.
