Agrochemicals should be seen as “the medicine of the field” because they are substances formulated through technological and scientific advances to maximize agricultural productivity by increasing the yield of crops per hectare and protecting them from pests and diseases that can affect and cause losses that could reach up to 40%, stated the Mexican Union of Agrochemical Manufacturers and Formulators (UMFFAAC).

“Agrochemicals should not be demonized out of ignorance, they should be used according to labeling, which reduces any risk that may exist for food producers and consumers.”

The organization pointed out that there are two types of agrochemicals, nutrients also called fertilizers and pesticides or phytosanitary products, which control harmful agents to the crop.

Currently, agrochemicals are tools that prevent the agricultural frontier from expanding and reduce the consumption of resources such as water, especially in the current drought situation.

He explained that in the latest public report from the Agri-Food and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP) on the area planted in Mexico in 2019, 71.8 percent used chemical fertilizers, however, there are states such as Sinaloa and Sonora, where the percentage of these agrochemicals It reaches 98.6 and 99.2 percent of its agricultural area.

The UMFFAAC indicated that according to the decentralized body of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader), thanks to the use of chemical fertilizers in the field, the productivity of crops has increased, which somehow inhibits the need for increase the agricultural area, since without them more areas would have to be allocated to planting.

Agrochemicals can preserve the soil and prevent its degradation

Likewise, it is also established that with these agrochemicals it is possible to conserve the soil and prevent its degradation, in addition to having an additional advantage by contributing to the greater production of raw materials for obtaining renewable energy.

In this way, the rational application of fertilizers has favorable and essential effects on soil fertility, yield and quality of crops in which these agrochemicals are used.

In the case of pesticides, these should be considered “plant medicine”, because it is “the cure” against agents that attack your health such as diseases caused by fungi, bacteria, viruses, thrips and nematodes, among others. , which reduce its performance, as is the case with insects and weeds.

All crops are threatened by diseases, pests and weeds, however, of the total harmful organisms, weeds represent 41.6 percent considering the reductions in yields and the costs of their control, the rest of the total is made up of other organisms such as insect pests with 28.1 percent, diseases with 27.1 percent and nematodes with 3.2 percent.

When the farmer has a sick plant, he turns to agrochemicals, which are substances intended for pest control and, like any medicine, they have a specific function and must be supplied according to a need of the organism, in this case of the plant.
