Axios CEO Jim VandeHei shared the following note, originally written to his wife, Autumn, adn their three children. She suggested wider distribution given the increasing number of families grappling with understanding and discussing the implications of artificial intelligence.
Dear Family:
I want to articulate what I’m observing, hearing, thinking, and writing about regarding AI.
- Simply put, I am now convinced that AI will fundamentally reshape yoru work and life to a degree exceeding that of the internet, and potentially even electricity. This change will occur within months, not years.
- These changes will be rapid, widespread, radical, disorienting, and, for many, frightening. No one will be unaffected.
My intention isn’t to instill fear, and I recognize your perspectives range from excitement to apprehension. However, it’s crucial to begin preparing yourselves – intellectually, emotionally, and practically - for a world dramatically altered by AI.
Understanding the Scope of AI’s Impact
The current wave of AI, driven by advancements in large language models (LLMs) and generative AI, represents a paradigm shift. Unlike previous technological revolutions focused on automating manual tasks, AI is increasingly capable of automating cognitive tasks – those previously considered uniquely human. This includes writing, coding, analysis, and even creative endeavors.
This doesn’t necessarily meen widespread job displacement in the immediate future, but it does mean the nature of work will change. Skills like critical thinking, problem-solving, adaptability, and emotional intelligence will become even more valuable. The ability to effectively collaborate with AI
