Artificial intelligence is no longer a futuristic concept in healthcare – it’s hear, and rapidly changing how we practice medicine. As a professor at Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine and clinician-investigator, I’ve seen firsthand the potential of AI to address critical challenges in patient care, particularly in underserved areas.However, realizing this potential requires a basic shift in medical education and a commitment to transparency with you, the patient.
Why AI in Healthcare demands a New approach
For too long, the conversation around AI in medicine has been framed as a threat. It’s not. The real risk lies in not preparing for its integration. We face important hurdles, especially in rural communities like those served by Dartmouth Health in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine, where specialist shortages in areas like geriatrics, palliative care, and mental health are acute. AI isn’t meant to replace doctors; it’s designed to augment our abilities and extend our reach.
The Importance of Patient Transparency
When AI influences clinical decisions, you deserve to know.This isn’t about the technology being experimental, but about upholding the core principles of partnership in healthcare. Many AI deployments are still being evaluated for safety, privacy, and effectiveness, and transparency builds trust.
Imagine a conversation like this: “I consulted a clinical decision support tool that analyzed thousands of similar cases. here’s what it suggested, and here’s why I agree or disagree.” This is the level of open interaction that should become standard practice.
A New Curriculum for a New Era
Recognizing this need,Geisel School of Medicine launched a extensive AI curriculum this fall. It’s integrated from day one, as we understand that if medical schools don’t proactively guide students, technology companies will dictate both the curriculum and clinical practice. We aim to train a generation of clinicians who master AI, not fear it.
AI Will Enhance, Not Replace, the Human Touch
Through my work in end-of-life care, I’ve learned the irreplaceable value of human connection. Holding a dying patient’s hand, offering comfort to grieving families, and simply being present in silence – these are acts of compassion no algorithm can replicate.
Though, AI can make us smarter and more effective. Just as the stethoscope didn’t render physical examination obsolete, AI won’t diminish the importance of the human touch. Both are essential.
What You Should Ask your Doctor (and Future Doctors)
As a patient, you have a vital role to play in this evolution.Here’s what to consider:
* Are AI tools being used in my care? Don’t hesitate to ask if AI has been consulted for your diagnosis or treatment plan.
* What is your training in AI? Understanding your doctor’s familiarity with these tools is crucial.
* Why or why not? If AI isn’t being used, ask for a clear explanation.
A Call to action for Medical Professionals & Institutions
The time for discussion is over. We need concrete action:
* ACGME Mandate: The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical education (ACGME) should mandate AI competency standards by 2026.
* Board Exam Integration: Medical licensing boards should incorporate AI literacy into board exams within two years.
* Protocol, Not Prohibition: Medical schools should replace bans or restrictions on AI with clear, ethical protocols for its use.
* Embrace Continuous Learning: We must prioritize ongoing education for practicing physicians to stay current with rapidly evolving AI technologies.
The Future of Medicine is Collaborative
The choice isn’t between human doctors and artificial intelligence. It’s between doctors who leverage all available tools – both technological and human - to provide the best possible care, and those who struggle alone.
We know the future our patients deserve: a healthcare system that is more accessible, more efficient, and more compassionate. It’s time for medical schools and health systems to catch up and equip the next generation of doctors with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in this new era.
