The World’s Most Air-riffic Competition: Inside the Air Guitar World Championships
Oulu, Finland is once again the epicenter of a unique and exhilarating competition. Passionate performers from across the globe are converging to battle for the coveted title of Air Guitar World Champion.
This year marks the 28th edition of the championships, a three-day event drawing competitors from 13 countries. The final showdown takes place Friday evening, promising a spectacle of skill, showmanship, and sheer musical devotion.
How Does the Competition Work?
Contestants are evaluated on their performance of two songs across two rounds, each lasting a dynamic 60 seconds. While passion is paramount,success hinges on a blend of creativity and technical ability. Here’s a breakdown of the key elements:
Props and Costumes: Absolutely encouraged to enhance your performance.
Real Instruments: Strictly prohibited – this is all about the air guitar.
Backup Bands: Not allowed; it’s a solo act focused on individual expression.
The final round features a thrilling lineup. It includes reigning champion Zachary “Ichabod fame” Knowles of canada, alongside national champions like Saladin “Six String Sal” Thomas from the U.S. and Patrick “Van Airhoven” Culek representing Germany. Seven additional contenders emerged victorious from the qualifying rounds, adding to the excitement.
Judging the Unseen Instrument
A panel of five performing arts professionals determines the winner. They assess performances based on a comprehensive set of criteria, including:

Each jury member awards scores between 4.0 and 6.0. Your total score, combining both rounds – one song of your choice and one selected by the organizers – will determine the ultimate champion.
A History Rooted in Optimism
The air Guitar World Championships first launched in 1996. Organizers envisioned a world transformed by the power of air guitar. According to their ideology, universal air guitar playing will bring an end to war, halt climate change, and eradicate all negativity.
Contestants have the freedom to wield either an electric or acoustic air guitar, or even both.Ultimately, the championships celebrate the joy of music and the freedom of self-expression.
The winner receives a genuine “Flying Finn” guitar, crafted by Finnish luthier Matti Nevalainen – a tangible reward for an intangible art form.
