There is an uproar about calls for a boycott of dates from Israel ahead of the month of Ramadan. Deputy Chief of the MUI Anwar Abbas emphasized that it is haram for all products issued by Israel to be purchased.

“Not only dates, all goods sold or produced from Israel, or companies that support Israel, are haram for us to buy,” said Anwar Abbas when contacted, Wednesday (6/3/2024).

“Because of what? Because what Israel did was an act that did not uphold the values of humanity and justice,” he added.

Anwar himself strongly criticized Israel’s barbaric actions against Palestine. According to him, society should not support Israel in any way.

“So, for example, if we buy Israeli products, it means we are buying the products of people who behave barbarically. So if we buy barbaric people, it means we are supporting the barbaric actions carried out by Israel,” he said.

Meanwhile, when asked about the government’s suggestions for blocking Israeli products, according to him, matters with high urgency could be accepted. However, food products, he said, should certainly be rejected because there is no urgency.

“This business world is not easy, for tools and materials, so there are things we can block and there are things we can’t. But if the food problem is clear, we can change it. For example, if there is an Israeli restaurant, just go to a Padang restaurant, if it’s dates just change it from Arabic,” he said.

“So as long as we can still replace it and we don’t depend on it, let’s stop,” he continued.

Form of Community Solidarity

Chairman of Commission VIII DPR RI Ashabul Kahfi admitted that he was not aware of the call for a boycott of Israeli dates. However, he said the call was a form of community solidarity with Palestine.

“Regarding Israeli dates, I don’t really know. It’s not directly related to our partners. But regarding the desire to boycott Israeli products, it must be understood that this is the community’s way of showing solidarity with the suffering of the Palestinian people, who in recent months have continued to be bombarded by soldiers’ weapons and bombs. Israel,” Ashabul told reporters, Wednesday (6/3).

Ashabul said the call was not a problem as long as there were no anarchic actions. He said the positive side is that people will choose to use domestic products.

“As long as the methods used are not anarchic, such as attacking or forcing shops to close, I don’t think there’s a problem,” he said.

“If it’s just an invitation not to buy certain products, I think that’s normal. Just like an invitation to use domestic products,” he added.
