The municipality of Emmen is setting aside almost 2 million euros for the construction of the new community center in the Angelslo district of Emmen. The intention is that the current building will be demolished before the construction holiday ends, to make way for the new construction.
The new community center will be located on the site of the current center, on Statenweg in Emmen. There will be a brand new building for the Angelslo Community Center Foundation. In addition, there will also be a branch of the Aldi supermarket in the building, on the ground floor. The new building is expected to be ready by the end of next year.
According to the municipality, the new community center is not an unnecessary luxury. The current community center is very outdated and has high energy costs, councilor René van der Weide previously stated. Angelslo therefore expressed its wish for new construction years ago.
Chairman Jan de Boer of the Angelslo Community Center Foundation: “We are very happy that the time has almost come, because we could no longer manage with the old building.” Not only because of overdue maintenance and heating costs, but also because of the layout. “We are dealing with a lot of empty spaces here.” In the new building to be built, the foundation will reduce from 2,600 square meters to 1,700 square meters. “And that’s fine for us.”
In terms of construction costs, the municipality of Emmen now contributes more than 1.9 million, mainly for the completion. It had previously been agreed that supermarket Aldi would bear the costs for the preparation and shell construction. The foundation has also taken out a loan of 850,000 euros for the project, De Boer reports.
The plan is for the old community center to be demolished before the construction holidays, so that the new construction can start after the summer holidays. “This should make it possible to put our new center into use at the end of next year.” A procedure is currently underway following an objection from the neighborhood. “We expect that we will figure it out,” the chairman thinks.
At the end of February it was announced that the Angelslo community center will be temporarily housed in the Kop van Zuid business complex near the Scheper Hospital during the demolition and construction phase. The foundation has already moved. “An excellent temporary solution,” the chairman said. “We are happy that this place was available, although we cannot do everything there. Activities such as gym and youth activities will take place in other places for the time being.”
The rental costs for the space in the business complex, more than 381,000 euros, will be borne by the municipality of Emmen. The municipality gets this money from a so-called disaster fund.
The Kop van Zuid is located on the Boermarkeweg, between the Scheper Hospital and the former site of the Aquarena swimming pool. The building is used, among other things, as office space, care hotel and health center by various parties.
