The Evolving Landscape of Music & A Search for Meaning: An Artist’s Reflection
The music industry is in a captivating, and frankly, challenging moment. It’s a space where replicating the impact of icons like Michael Jackson, Prince, Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Madonna feels increasingly distant. The dedication, artistry, and sheer effort required to reach that level simply aren’t consistently present in today’s landscape. A genuine resurgence of that caliber demands a fundamental shift,a renewed commitment to craft.
This isn’t a cynical observation, but a realistic one. It’s a sentiment shared by many artists grappling with the current state of the industry, and one that’s deeply informed my own perspective after a decade immersed in it.
A Decade In: Reassessing Priorities
Recently, I’ve been doing a lot of soul-searching about my own future within music. The truth is, my faith in the industry’s trajectory has waned.While I’ll continue to contribute as much as I can to positive change, I recognize that has limitations.
My next ten years will be focused on a different kind of creation: building a strong family, establishing creative hubs back home, and equipping the next generation of musicians with the tools they need to thrive – and survive – in this often-brutal industry. This includes prioritizing their mental, physical, and emotional wellbeing, something often overlooked.
And creatively? I believe I have one more album left in me. After that,I’m seriously contemplating a complete withdrawal from public life.
A Profound Loss & A Shift in Perspective
This isn’t a sudden decision. It’s been brewing, but crystallized by a deeply personal loss. My stepmother recently passed away after a battle with cancer.
I travel home only once a year for a couple of weeks. In those ten years of building my career, I missed countless family milestones – weddings, birthdays, gatherings. most tragically, I wasn’t able to be fully present for her during her final months, consumed as I was by work. Her passing,just before the Grammy nominations were announced,was a stark wake-up call.
It forced me to confront what truly matters. Everything I’ve been striving for,I realized,was ultimately for my family,to honor them and provide for them. To lose her while pursuing that goal felt… profoundly wrong. It fundamentally altered my understanding of purpose.
Finding Hope in a New Generation of Artists
Despite my reservations about the industry, I haven’t lost faith in the power of music itself. What’s keeping me going, what’s reigniting my passion, is discovering the incredible work of artists who are creating from a place of genuine authenticity.
Specifically, two artists have been notably impactful:
* KeiyaA: Her album, “hooke’s law,” arrived at a crucial moment. She single-handedly wrote, produced, and arranged the entire project, a testament to the power of independent artistry.Her music is deeply personal,powerfully Black,and profoundly cathartic. It reminded me that true artistry still exists.
* Precious Renee Tucker: This experimental jazz pianist is a true genius. Her innovative approach to music is inspiring, and her talent is undeniable. Seeing her open for Solange at a recent library event in New York was a powerful reminder of the brilliance that continues to emerge.
These artists,and others like them – particularly Black women pushing boundaries in art and music – are beacons of hope. They demonstrate that innovation, soul, and genuine expression are still alive and well.
Looking Ahead: A Focus on legacy & Wellbeing
My journey in music has been rewarding, but it’s also been demanding. The industry often prioritizes output over wellbeing, and that’s something I’m resolute to address.
My future endeavors will be guided by a desire to create a more sustainable and supportive ecosystem for artists. This means fostering spaces where creativity can flourish,providing practical guidance on navigating the industry,and – most importantly – prioritizing the mental,physical,and emotional health of those who dedicate their lives to music.
While my time as a performing artist may be drawing to a close, my commitment to nurturing the next generation and championing authentic artistry will continue. It’s a legacy I hope to build,one rooted in love,family,and a deep respect for the power of music.
