The increase in collective layoffs is becoming a disturbing trend, especially in the province. Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship. Pomorska Fabryka Mebli in Nowe plans to lay off 270 employees, and Chełmża’s Bioethanol – 55. Only in the first quarter of 2024, the number of layoffs amounted to 368, significantly exceeding the number of 161 from the same period last year – informs banker.pl.

The increase in the number of group layoffs in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship is becoming a cause for concern. According to data from the Provincial Labor Office in Toruń, group layoffs affected 368 employees in the first quarter of 2024.

The biggest blow to the local community is the planned dismissal of 270 employees at the Pomorska Furniture Factory in Nowe. The company’s problems began with the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, and were escalated by the war in Ukraine. Despite looking for an investor, the company was unable to reverse the unfavorable situation.

Additionally, 55 people will lose their jobs at Bioethanol AEG in Chełmża. The company, whose roots date back to 1947, was unable to cope with the significant increase in raw material prices, which increased by up to 400%.

All employees and management will receive notice of termination at the end of May, and employment will end in August.

Meanwhile in February this year 102 employees of the Don Trucking transport company in Bydgoszcz received notice of termination. The company is currently in bankruptcy.

The problem is becoming serious

Maciej Smolarek, spokesman for the Provincial Labor Office in Toruń, noticed a significant increase in reports of group layoffs. In the first quarter of 2023, reports concerned 66 people working in industrial processing and 40 people in construction, while in the same period in 2024, we are talking about 368 people, of which as many as 325 work in industry and 37 in trade.

Such a drastic increase in collective redundancies could have serious consequences for the local economy and community, forcing the government and organizations to take action to mitigate the impact and support affected workers.
