Anouk posted an Instagram photo of her menstrual blood on Friday. She wrote: “Cutting off your pee doesn’t make you a woman. But this does.” Many Dutch celebrities react angrily to the message, because it is said to be hateful towards trans women.
“Am I being canceled now?” Anouk asked at the end of the message, in which she seems to state that people who do not menstruate cannot be women.
The 48-year-old singer receives a lot of criticism in the comments. “Too bad. I honestly expected otherwise,” someone responds. “The fewer expectations you have, the better,” Anouk responds.
Celebrities also reacted with surprise to Anouk’s message. “That you then sit on the toilet and muse a bit, look back, think ‘this is actually a good time to taunt trans women’, take a photo, then post it completely, and then sit back satisfied and wait until Boulevard in Show news call,” writes presenter Tim Hofman.
Comedian Claudia de Breij also makes herself heard: “Anouk, don’t worry. You are not going to be canceled because of your post, you are much too loved for that. A lot more loved than trans women. They can hardly be canceled, because to be canceled You must first have been embraced and they get that a lot less than you and I. That’s why you can just support them or leave them alone.”
Influencer Nikkie de Jager posted Anouk’s message on her own Instagram page. She has almost twenty million followers there. “The fact that one of the most down-to-earth and most respected musicians in the Netherlands turns out to be a shameless transphobe was NOT on my bingo card for 2024,” she writes. “We are a minority that simply wants acceptance, leave us the fuck alone.”
Anouk has not yet responded to the criticism, apart from a few short responses on her page.
