Tim Cook Hints at New iCloud+ Tiers for Power Users
Apple executives signaled during a quarterly financial call that higher iCloud+ storage tiers are under consideration to support heavy users of Apple Intelligence.
Speaking on the company’s financial results call, Apple CEO Tim Cook addressed compute costs and potential tier upgrades as advanced artificial intelligence features roll out to consumers. The discussion offers a preliminary look at how the tech giant plans to manage infrastructure expenses tied to resource-heavy artificial intelligence workloads. While formal product announcements are rare during quarterly earnings reports, company leadership used the session to outline future pricing and storage strategies for power users.
Managing Compute Costs
During the Q3 2026 financial call, Goldman Sachs analyst Michael Ng questioned leadership regarding compute expenses and potential strategies for recovering those investments through upgraded cloud storage subscriptions. In response, Apple CEO Tim Cook noted that the company is currently in the early stages of evaluating infrastructure demands.
“In terms of what it means for compute cost, it’s obviously early going for us, and so I don’t want to say that we have a complete plan for that,” Cook stated during the call. “We do believe there will be people that want to use it a lot, and so we will have some kind of upgrade possibilities on iCloud+ where people can buy up the stack on iCloud+, and we’ll see how the pickup for that is. But we could not be more excited about where the product is.”
Although specific pricing details and tier structures were not disclosed, the prospect of expanded storage options aligns with prior rollouts. Apple previously indicated at WWDC26 last June that advanced artificial intelligence capabilities would feature daily usage limits, with expanded access tied to iCloud+.
Expanding Beyond the 12TB Limit for AI Processing
The existing iCloud+ architecture provides 5GB of free storage, with paid subscription tiers extending up to 12TB.
By comparison, other AI companies offer storage up to 100GB. Introducing dedicated tiers optimized for artificial intelligence would position Apple alongside competitors offering high-capacity storage packages designed specifically for power users.
Autumn Product Cycles and Hardware Debuts
Industry expectations point toward an official iOS 27 rollout in September, coinciding with anticipated hardware introductions including the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Ultra models. Analysts suggest that any adjustments to cloud storage tiers or artificial intelligence access models will likely be detailed alongside those hardware debuts.
