Ariana Grande has announced plans to step back from public life following the conclusion of her current concert series. The singer, currently mid-way through her Eternal Sunshine world tour, confirmed that she will take a hiatus from public-facing appearances to prioritize her well-being after completing her scheduled performances in London.
The decision includes withdrawing from the highly anticipated West End revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George. Grande had been slated to star in the production at the Barbican Centre next summer alongside actor Jonathan Bailey. Representatives for the performer stated that the move is intended to allow her to move away from the intense public scrutiny she has faced regarding her career and personal life.
“Ariana will be taking a step back from visibility after she completes the Eternal Sunshine Tour,” a spokesperson said. “She looks forward to finishing the tour and ending it on a high note, both healthily and happily, and then taking a much-deserved break from public-facing work and appearances.”
The Eternal Sunshine tour continues with a significant residency at London’s O2 Arena. According to the official tour schedule, the Grammy Award-winning artist is set to perform 10 shows at the venue, with dates running from August 15 through September 1. The residency remains one of the biggest arena residencies of the year.
Production Changes at the Barbican
Following the announcement, Empire Street Productions confirmed that the role previously held by Grande for the Sunday in the Park with George revival will be recast. The production, which is scheduled to open at the Barbican in summer 2027, will proceed with new casting to be announced at a later date. An official spokesperson for the production expressed understanding regarding the singer’s decision, stating, “We know this cannot have been an easy decision, and she makes it with our complete understanding and support.”
The project had garnered significant attention due to the reunion of Grande and Jonathan Bailey, who previously worked together on the musical Wicked. Despite the change in lead casting, the Barbican Centre remains the confirmed venue for the 2027 run.
Addressing Public Scrutiny
In the track “Yes, And?” from her 2024 album, Eternal Sunshine, Grande challenges critics who comment on her physical appearance, singing, “Don’t comment on my body, do not reply / Your business is yours, and mine is mine.”
Representatives emphasized that the current tour has been a positive experience for the singer, who has expressed gratitude for the support of her fanbase. The hiatus is framed as a necessary step to move away from the “endless, ongoing public scrutiny” that has accompanied her recent professional projects. Her latest studio album, Eternal Sunshine, has received critical praise, contributing to a high-profile year for the artist.
