An armed attack took place in Istanbul during the election program of AK Party Küçükçekmece Mayor candidate Aziz Yeniay.

One person was seriously injured in the attack at 16.30. While Yeniay was carrying out an election campaign in an association, the attackers drove up to the beginning of the same street and opened fire from the vehicle windows.

KOCA: HE WAS TAKEN INTO BRAIN SURGERY

Minister of Health Fahrettin Koca gave information about the health condition of the injured citizen. Koca announced that the citizen was taken to brain surgery after emergency intervention and intensive care.

PRESIDENT ERDOĞAN: I CONDEMN THE ATTACK

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan shared a post about the armed attack on his social media account.

In his post, Erdoğan said, “I condemn the armed attack carried out during the election campaign of Aziz Yeniay, the Küçükçekmece Mayor candidate of our AK Party and the People’s Alliance, and I wish a speedy recovery to our seriously injured citizen.” he said.

Emphasizing that a comprehensive investigation into the attack was immediately launched, President Erdoğan noted the following in his post:

“We will never allow efforts to poison the process by those who cannot accept that the election process proceeds healthily and befits our democracy. Any attack aimed at our democracy, unity and solidarity will not achieve its purpose.”

STATEMENT FROM MINISTER YERLİKAYA

Minister of Internal Affairs Ali Yerlikaya made a statement about the attack.

Yerlikaya said: “Today around 16.30, fire was opened with a long-barreled gun and a gun at the place where AK Party Küçükçekmece Mayor candidate Mr. Aziz Yeniay’s candidate promotion event was held in Kanarya District.

Küçükçekmece Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office made a statement about the attack.

In the statement, “On 10.02.2024, while AK Party Küçükçekmece Mayor candidate Mr. Aziz Yeniay was carrying out election work in an association in the Kanarya District, an investigation was immediately launched by our Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office after one of our citizens was injured as a result of gun fire from the beginning of the street where the association is located. Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç announced that a judicial investigation into the incident has been launched.

In his statement on his social media account, Minister Tunç said, “A judicial investigation has been launched by the Küçükçekmece Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office regarding the attack, and efforts are continuing to capture the attackers. Such treacherous attacks against our democracy will never achieve their purpose.” he said.

INSTITUTION: I CONDEMN THE ATTACK

AK Party Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Candidate Murat Kurum made a statement about the attack.

The institution stated the following in its statement: “I condemn the attack carried out with long-barreled weapons while our Küçükçekmece Mayor Candidate Aziz Yeniay was conducting his election campaign. Get well soon to all of us.
These threats to our democracy will never, ever turn us off our path!”

İmamoğlu said, “We are relieved to learn that the incident had nothing to do with the AK Party candidate and that no one lost their life. I wish a speedy recovery and get well soon to our citizen who was injured due to another public order incident.” he said.
