In the Dominican Republic, vaccines against Covid-19 from Pharmaceutical AstraZeneca have not been applied since 2021, which was received during the pandemic by less than 3% of the vaccinated population, the Minister of Public Health, Víctor Atallah, assured yesterday.

He also reported that there is no vaccine against Covid-19 from that pharmaceutical company in the country’s warehouses and that both the Ministry of Public Health and AstraZeneca itself maintain active drug surveillance and that so far in the country there have been no detected cases of adverse reactions to the vaccine.

The AstraZeneca vaccines manufactured in India were the first batch of 20,000 doses that arrived in the Dominican Republic in February 2021 and began to be applied among health personnel and another population group. Other batches were subsequently received through the Revolving Fund of the OPS.

Given the announcement made by the pharmaceutical company AztraZeneca of the worldwide withdrawal of its vaccine against Covid-19 from the market based on reports that account for cases of patients who had side effects, including thrombosis after its application, the Minister of Health reported who requested a meeting with representatives of that company, which took place this Monday, to receive an official report on the situation of the vaccine.

Atallah reported that on Monday he met with AstraZeneca on his initiative to receive an official report on the status of his vaccine.

The official assured that less than 3% of the Dominican population was immunized with this vaccine during the pandemic and that both the Ministry and the company have followed up on drug surveillance without adverse events due to the application.

“This side effect happens 14 to 20 days after the dose applied, so we are already outside the window and until May 6, 2024 we have no reported cases, so we understand that we are fine,” said the official. when asked about it.

He assured that the Government and the Ministry of Health remain attentive and touch on all aspects in an early and responsible manner to answer any questions.

The Swedish pharmaceutical company announced this week the withdrawal of its Covid-19 vaccine from the global market, as cases and lawsuits arise from patients due to side effects, such as thrombosis after its application.

The vaccine, called Vaxzevria, was developed in collaboration with the University of Oxford.
