Asus is working on next-gen headset with Metas Horizon OS

After Meta opened its VR operating system Horizon OS to third parties, Asus, among others, wants to bring a “next-generation gaming headset”.

The Facebook parent company Meta recently announced the opening of its VR platform Horizon OS, which will also be available to third-party hardware providers in the future. Away from the in-house Quest headsets that’s what you promise according to the announcement for “consumers more choice” and for “developers a bigger ecosystem to build on.”

In addition to Lenovo with a focus on “productivity, learning and entertainment”, Asus is also one of the first licensees with its gaming brand Republic of Gamers (ROG) and, according to the wording, wants to rely on an in-house development with “completely new performance”. Not much more is known about it yet and accordingly there are currently no details about design, key data, release, price, etc.

“We’ve been inspired by the incredible gaming community that has formed around virtual and mixed reality, and we know that the most passionate gamers want powerful hardware,” Asus Co-CEO SY Hsu said in the announcement. “With Meta Horizon OS, Asus and Republic of Gamers will develop the next generation gaming headset.”

Asus VR headset probably with Snapdragon and PC support

In terms of computing hardware, however, the devices apparently won’t differ too much, because as Meta explains in his blog entry, they will all continue to use Qualcomm chips, such as the current Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2: “All of these devices are made by “We will benefit from our long-term collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., which produces the Snapdragon processors that are tightly integrated with our software and hardware stacks.” As with Meta’s Quest series and the mention of Steam Link and Xbox Games Pass in the announcement, support for PC and SteamVR can also be expected.
