Deputy Attorney General Clarifies Release of Father and Son Detained by ICE
Washington,D.C. – Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche stated on Sunday that a five-year-old boy and his father, detained in Minneapolis last month by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), were released over the weekend without filing for asylum. Blanche refuted claims that the family had actively pursued asylum status, clarifying a point of contention surrounding their detention.
The case of liam Conejo Ramos and his father, Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias, has been marked by conflicting information regarding their legal status. While the family’s legal representatives maintain an asylum application is in progress – a claim that would typically protect them from deportation while awaiting a court decision – Blanche asserted this was not the case.
“There’s a significant disagreement regarding whether they properly applied for asylum,” Blanche explained during an appearance on ABC’s “This Week.” He added that publicly available court documents do not support the existence of an ongoing asylum claim,aligning with the department of Homeland Security’s position that the family was unlawfully present in the United States.
Blanche emphasized that the Trump governance considers unauthorized entry into the U.S. a criminal offense, justifying detention even in cases where individuals have no prior criminal record. “the fact that they’re here illegally is a crime,” he stated, adding that their presence without legal status constitutes a violation of the law. He further noted the ongoing legal debate regarding the detention of individuals pending immigration proceedings.
The pair were released from a detention center in Dilley, Texas, on Saturday following a judge’s ruling. Representative Joaquin Castro, D-Texas, personally escorted the family back to Minnesota after picking them up. Representative Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., also celebrated their release, posting a photo with the family and castro.
The detention of the five-year-old boy, particularly during his pickup from school on January 20th, drew widespread criticism from attorneys and lawmakers.
