Australian EV and Hybrid Sales Reach Record High Amid Fuel Price Surge

The Australian new vehicle market reached a historic inflection point in the June quarter, as rising global energy costs reshaped consumer purchasing habits. Figures from the Australian Automobile Association’s latest EV Index show that battery electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids, and conventional hybrids combined to capture almost half of all new car sales during the three-month period.

The shift coincides with severe volatility in international fuel markets. Petrol prices surged to a peak in March, driven by instability in the Middle East that disrupted key supply routes. Although the federal government intervened on March 30 by introducing a fuel excise reduction to cushion the blow for motorists, that temporary relief measures came to an end on Sunday, pushing pump prices back toward $2 a litre.

Record Surge in Electric and Hybrid Registrations

Sales of battery electric vehicles more than doubled in the second quarter of 2026, jumping from 34,435 vehicles in the first three months of the year to 69,414 between April and June.

Market share figures underscore the rapid transformation. Fully electric vehicles claimed 21.03 per cent of all new sales, while plug-in hybrids accounted for 10.58 per cent, and hybrids comprised another 17.6 per cent. When the index first began tracking market data in 2022, traditional internal combustion engine vehicles accounted for roughly nine out of every ten cars sold.

By contrast, petrol and diesel vehicle sales experienced their steepest quarterly drop on record, falling to 50.84 per cent of June quarter sales down from 64.23 per cent in the first quarter.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers Directs Watchdog to Monitor Fuel Gouging

As fuel excise reductions expire and prices climb again, federal authorities have warned retailers against taking advantage of consumers. Treasurer Jim Chalmers announced on Sunday that the competition watchdog has been directed to intensify monitoring of retail fuel outlets.

Any unjustified price spikes will face serious scrutiny by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, according to Chalmers. Retailers found to be violating price-gouging laws face multimillion-dollar penalties.

With fuel excise relief concluded and pump prices climbing, motorists continue to face severe cost-of-living pressures, even as the accelerated pivot toward electric and hybrid options offers long-term shelter from volatile international oil markets.
