Students who found a room in Amsterdam will also be the most expensive in 2023, according to figures from rental platform Kamernet.nl. The average rent here last year was 947 euros per month, while the national average was 551 euros. The difference with the average rent in other cities also became a lot larger.

Kamernet analyzed all homes offered on the platform in the past year. In 2023 there were 157,062. The website also offers studios or apartments with one or more rooms, but the majority of the offer consists of rooms.

Difference

Amsterdam student rooms have been the most expensive in the Netherlands for years, but because rents here also rose the fastest last year, the difference with other cities has become even greater.

According to Kamernet, students will pay almost 20 percent more than in 2022, when a room cost an average of 791 euros. A year earlier, in 2021, that price was around 680 euros. Students have therefore paid 39.3 percent more in two years.

Of the major student cities, Utrecht comes closest to Amsterdam. The average rent there was 704 euros per month in 2023; 14 percent higher than a year earlier.

In other cities the average rent for a student room is even lower. In Rotterdam a room costs an average of 671 euros per month. In Nijmegen it is 517 euros and in Groningen 479 euros. If you don’t want to spend more than 400 euros, it is best to study in Enschede. The average room rent there is around 371 euros per month.
