Germany’s Wolff and Filter Named Handball Players of the Year
Germany’s Fabian Wolff and Katharina Filter have been named the country’s Handball Players of the Year, as announced on February 16, 2024. The awards recognize outstanding performance both domestically and internationally.
Wolff, a key player for THW Kiel and the German national team, secured the men’s title. He previously received the award in 2015 and 2016. Despite the German national team’s recent silver medal finish at the European Handball Championship, losing too Denmark in the final, Wolff emphasized the importance of teamwork. “It is a great honour for me and something special to be named Germany’s Handball Player of the Year. Even though it is indeed an individual award,it also speaks for the good work of my teams – both at THW and with the national team,” he stated.
Mathias Gidsel of Denmark, who plays for Füchse Berlin, recently named world Handball player for the third consecutive time, finished third in the voting with 2,316 points.
In the women’s category,goalkeeper Katharina Filter,playing for Team Esbjerg in Denmark,took the top spot. She received 4,104 points, narrowly defeating her national teammate Antje Döll (4,080) of Sport-Union Neckarsulm. Xenia Smits of Metz finished third with 2,544 points.
Filter expressed her gratitude and motivation, stating, “I’m very pleased that I’m receiving so much recognition for what I do and it confirms that I’m on the right track.it shows that it’s worth investing so much and motivates me to keep going.” Her strong performances were instrumental in the German national team’s silver medal win at the World Championship in December.
